Doula Services

The term doula is a Greek word meaning 'woman's assistant.' This assistant was likely the person who helped the woman of the house during childbirth. Today the term is applied to a trained labor support professional.

In practical terms, a doula is someone who helps a woman cope with labor and birth. Numerous studies have shown that women who have a doula during childbirth have shorter, more comfortable labors and need fewer caesarian sections or other medical interventions. In short, women who have a doula are more likely to have healthier babies.

The Birth Partner's doula is prepared to help a mother:
* recognize stalling points in labor and help her get labor back on track
* find positions of comfort to ease the pain of labor
* identify various stages of labor and understand what she's feeling and experiencing
* avoid medical interventions that might prolong labor and make it more painful

A doula is not a substitute for a caring family member or friend who provides invaluable support and love for the laboring mother. Instead, a doula also supports the labor coach, giving the coach valuable information and respite during the labor process.

Birth Partners primary doula, Angie Scharnhorst, works with a group of other doulas in the Kansas City area to ensure that all clients have 24-hour access to assistance when needed. Doula clients are encouraged to meet with Angie at least twice -- to share important information and ensure a rapport -- before the baby's scheduled due date.

Before hiring a doula, all clients are encouraged to visit the Doulas of North America website at http://www.dona.org/FindingADoula.html to read their list of recommendations for finding a qualified doula.
